August Music Festival 2013 Introduction
Summer Festival 2013
Welcome to the St Lawrence Jewry August Music Festival. It has been a tradition at St Lawrence Jewry that we hold a summer festival of some significance. This is unusual in the City of London in that most churches ‘shut up shop’ for the month of August. Every lunch time during the month we shall host a concert for the pleasure of those who continue to work throughout the summer season.
This year our Festival takes as its theme Schubert and Britten. You will find some information on the composers in our web site. As usual, there is an emphasis on younger artists, giving them a chance to perform in this beautiful setting and to experience the joy of working in such a fine acoustic. We see this as part of our Christian ministry to them and to the City.
The church is renowned for its high excellence in music under the direction of our organist Catherine Ennis. We thank her and Graham Allum (programme administrator for this festival) for all their work in maintaining this tradition of music in the City.
The concerts are given free of charge, so as to make them accessible to all. We are grateful to Lilian & Henry Stephenson and Willmott Dixon for sponsoring this August Festival. However, we invite you, if you have appreciated the concert and if you are able to afford it, to make a donation to the church in the plates provided. This will help to ensure the viability of our ongoing music ministry. For your assistance, the true cost of the series is equivalent to approximately £5 per person (based on 2012 figures).
The church is open daily from 8.00 am until 5.30pm as a place for peace and quiet, offering the space for prayer and meditation. There are a number of special services during the week and there is regular recital of music – piano on Mondays and organ on Tuesdays – with occasional special concerts at lunchtime or in the early evening. Look out for the details on our website and on Twitter.
With my prayers and best wishes.
